This poem is about my own wedding and the finding of my true love and best friend after a 30-year dance through life. The poem explains most of the story, and I hope you enjoy this as much as the 150 in attendance at our wedding did!
♥♥
We met 30 years ago this spring
Each dating our best friends
Immediately we were friends ourselves
Our ears on constant lend.
♥
We helped each other through everything
As our friendship bloomed of gold
Not realizing we were building a love
That only a lifetime could hold.
♥
Working on that old ’57
Our hearts began to bind
I carved my name into its fender
And our minds for all of time.
♥
Graduation came and Todd moved on
Even though I had one year left
We stayed in contact all that time
And I still thank God for that.
♥
When October came, I needed him
More than I ever knew
I was seventeen and my life had changed
As a babe inside me grew.
♥
The father and I had split our ways
As Todd’s heart for me was breaking
He came to me and professed his love
Offering his heart for the taking.
♥
This decision was very difficult
Caring deeply for his friend and I
But the love for me within his heart
Would not let him just stand by.
♥
At the National Western of ‘84
He drug me all around
So proud to be the one with me
And my belly oh so round.
♥
When I was about six months along
Todd took me out one night
And sitting in his Thoutt Brother’s truck
He asked me to be his wife.
♥
The pain I felt right then and there
I still can feel today
The moment I decided to tell him, “No.”
And go our separate ways.
♥
Twelve years after his proposal to me
He showed up at my door
Each of us just single
As Todd expressed his love once more.
♥
We spent the day, sitting on the porch
Watching our children play
It was spring again, but in ‘96
As our love bloomed again that day.
♥
When the sun had set upon this day
Again, my love proposed
And once again I was not ready
Giving a tearful, fearful, “No.”
♥
When my divorce was final in ‘98
And my feet back on the ground
I once again began my search
Looking for him all around.
♥
It was then twelve years again that passed
In the spring of 2010
When I found our old friend, Bobby
Who was one of Todd’s best friends.
♥
Offering to reach Todd’s brother, Troy
Who was a Facebook friend
I begged him to get my Todd out there
So I could find him once again.
♥
It was 5/15/2010
When his face showed on the screen
Under the “People you might know,”
From the Ranum High School team.
♥
I checked his profile to learn of him
And to finally touch base
But when I saw that he was single
Tears ran down my face.
♥
I messaged him a friend request
And he answered right away
I had him call me on the phone
And again, we talked all day.
♥
We met that night at 7:00 pm
To go out on a date
We ate our dinner and talked all night
Being asked to leave when it was so late.
♥
When we got back to his quiet house,
Seeing his truck in all its glory
I knew I’d found my true love again
Writing a new chapter in our story.
♥
We were laughing as I asked of him
If he would marry me
Then he asked if I was talking to his truck
Or affording him that plea.
♥
One month later, we found our church
And joined AUMC
We wanted to show our thanks to God
For allowing us to be.
♥
It was unbeknownst to each of us
Our paths had crossed quite often
It started with the Methodist church
Of our childhoods not forgotten.
♥
His Methodist men’s group assisted us
They helped us build our church
Even though I did not know him then
I knew the name, Todd Pfertsh.
♥
It seems as though we’ve always lived
Within blocks of each other
God always giving us the chance
To cross paths with one another.
♥
It may have taken 30 years
For this love of ours to grow
But at least I finally told him, “Yes,”
The third time that he proposed!
♥
We just bought a house up in Coal Creek
As we had always dreamed
It was something we always talked about
While working on the car it seemed.
♥
Our paths have finally come to one
As we head down this new road
Leading in the direction of our life’s dreams
Where our love hath always flowed.
